Non-Projected Display Teaching/Learning Materials
(The most common type of visuals found in a classroom)

The page has the objective of describing and explaining various traditional teaching aids which continued to play an important role in teaching methods and are still in use at present.

Before proceeding in discussing the non-projected displays we should first find out what traditional teaching aid is about. What are the materials used in non-projected displays?

Non-projected learning materials are not very technological but are the very basic stuff that has been used in classrooms for years. Like printed and duplicated materials, non- projected displays can be used in a wide range of teaching/ learning situations, covering all three of the basic classes (mass instruction, individualized learning, and group learning). Non- projected displays are those aids which are used without any projection. The usual non- projected traditional teaching aids are chalkboards, marker boards, electronic marker boards, adhesive displays (felt boards/ flannel boards, hook-and-loop boards, magnetic boards), and charts, posters and similar flat displays (pictorial materials, flip charts, charts and wall charts, posters, and bulletin board). Let us learn about these teaching aids and its effectiveness in teaching.

CHALKBOARDS, MARKER BOARDS AND ELECTRONIC MARKER BOARDS

Chalk board is one of the very old and most used teaching aid in the school. At present, this teaching material has been transformed from ordinary wood to the most sophisticated plastic, fiber and glass materials. It gained its new name as marker board and electronic marker boards, but whatever the changes the basic function remains the same.

Chalkboard is the most practical and useful tool of a teacher in the classroom, but today some teachers are not using this as their primary teaching aid. They shifted from the traditional non-projected visuals to projected teaching materials. Teachers prefer using power point presentation or electronic visual materials to assist them in their lessons. Though chalkboard is not very technological the effectiveness and functionality of this material can’t be dispense. This material is very useful in jotting essential ideas, main points solicited from the class. It is also very useful in showing and explaining the subject in the class like solving math problems.

Technology gave a new face for the traditional chalkboard. At present we have smart board that is very interactive. It functions like typical board and but at the same time projector. The touch sensitive display screen connects to a computer or digital projector to show images.

ADHESIVE DISPLAY
(felt boards, flannel board, hook-and loop boards, and magnetic boards)

These adhesive displays can be useful in making an oral presentation, to provide a wide range of language practice for your students and language skills, forms or functions to grammar items and even using it as an educational tool.

The materials can be placed on the board progressively to tell a story or to keep the audience aware of the main points in talk or the maker of the display wants to specify about their subjects.

These materials are simple and inexpensive to construct. It easy to store and light to carry. The students also enjoy participating in flannel board activities if you choose materials appropriate to their mental maturity. Today, some of the teachers are still using these materials and are still very effective.

CHARTS, POSTERS AND SIMILAR FLAT DISPLAYS
(Pictorial materials, flip charts, charts and wall charts, posters and bulletin board)

Flip charts, wall- charts, posters, pictorial pictures, and bulletin board are versatile and useful visual aids that have been used by teachers for a long time.

These materials are very simple to use, inexpensive, portable, we don’t need an electricity to use it, effective to use to help to focus your learners’ attention, and it can record ideas from discussions and keep for future reference.

Although these materials can be bought in any educational suppliers, it is a very simple matter to make your own materials. All you need is to be creative, patience to do the materials, and be idealistic to what you are directing about the concepts you’re trying to portray.

At present, charts, posters and similar flat displays have still place in learning process. Though we are known in the new technological age where computer plays important role in learning process, there are still some teachers who believe in the power of non-projected displays like these in better learning.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGES OF NON-PROJECTED DISPLAY

Traditional teaching tools like felt boards/ flannel board, hook-and-loop board, and magnetic boards and other non-projected teaching aids are little by little replaced with computers and other digital gadgets. Some schools are equipped with hi-technology facilities.   Instead of using felt board/ flannel board that the engage the students in the subject matter, the teacher might use the SMART board to add music, text and interactive components to the story and lesson. For instance, a high school chemistry teacher might use the boards to explain the periodic table of elements with the help of PowerPoint, they’re just watching it go by

Using technology in today’s is a given. We live in the age where blogs, chat rooms, internet, and podcasts are common teaching tools. Yet a classroom can still thrive when stripped down to the basics- chalk boards and adhesive displays.
Using these all materials in teaching improves teaching effectiveness, classroom management and student success.
